Aker Arctic demonstrates autonomous vessel in model test

An autonomous ship model has been successfully tested in Aker Arctic’s ice model test laboratory in Helsinki, Finland. In the demonstration test the ship model was able to detect obstacles in the ice tank utilizing onboard sensors, maneuver around them without operator input and moor itself automatically to a target pier. Spyros Hirdaris – Aalto University

Spyros Hirdaris is Associate Professor of Maritime Safety at Aalto University, Marine & Arctic Technology Group. Before joining Aalto he worked for 14 years for Lloyd’s Register at UK, Europe and the Far East on appointments related with Strategic R&D, Consultancy, Marine New Construction, Technology and Innovation management. He is European Engineer, Chartered Engineer, Member of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects and the Technical Chamber of Greece.

Since 2006 he served in various committees of the International Ship Structures Congress and
participated in initiatives for the benefit of EU WATERBORNE Transport.

Victor Schoenmakers – Port of Rotterdam

Victor Schoenmakers is Director Corporate Strategy.

Since 1 October 2014 is Victor Schoenmakers Director Corporate Strategy. We focus on the long term strategy for the port of Rotterdam. This department oversees and monitors the meaning of trends and developments that are relevant for the port together with our partners in and around the Port. We develop scenarios and strategies for the way we should anticipate on these developments. The department’s key activities are strategic intelligence and strategic planning (Portvision 2030 and business plans).

In the past, Victor Schoenmakers has held manifold positions at the PoR, such as Director European and International Affairs at the Rotterdam Port Authority. He is responsible for the strategic political design and the positioning of the Rotterdam Port Authority in the 27 Member States of the European Union.

Director of Marketing and Head of Strategy and Communication. He was heavily involved in the
corporatization of the port authority. In the period 1993-2000 he was Executive Secretary and Head of General Affairs department.

From 2008 to 2012.Victor Schoenmakers has been Chairman of the European Seaports Organisation
(ESPO). ESPO represents the common interests of European port authorities, port administrations and port associations with the institutions of the European Union.

Olli Siren – Miltton
Olli is one of the city activists behind many initiatives including Restaurant day and Bells for Aleppo, both Helsinki born movements spread around the globe. He is a creative mind with an entrepreneurial attitude towards societal change. Olli has worked with diverse aspects of communications for more than a decade. His passion is to seek radically new opportunities for collective action to make his city more vibrant and alive.
Risto E.J. Penttilä – Nordic West Office

Risto E.J. Penttilä has recently co-founded Nordic West Office, which is a consulting firm and a think tank with its main focus on helping Nordic companies navigate in the new West. Together with 16 prominent Nordic companies, NWO has developed four Global Scenarios to describe plausible futures for 2021-2026.

Prior to his CEO post in NWO, Risto served as CEO of Finland Chamber of Commerce and has also been a member of the Finnish parliament.

Tero Hottinen – Cargotec Corporation

Director, Emerging Digital Business. He has a long background in strategy, digital business development and start-up collaboration within maritime and energy industries. Currently he is driving the maritime logistics transformation into efficient and sustainable cargo flow with the aid of digitalization.

Christophe Tytgat – Sea Europe

Secretary General of Sea Europe, the Ships and Maritime Equipment Association. From June 2001 till February 2016, Christophe worked for the European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA) The last three years, he was ECSA’s Senior Director responsible for competition and taxation matters as well as social and legal affairs. Prior to joining ECSA, Christophe has worked for about three years in the Belgian federal administration, first with the Foreign Affairs Office and then with the Maritime Transport Administration. Christophe holds degrees in Law, International Relations and East-European Studies from the University of Leuven and has a degree in International and European Law from the University of Brussels.

Sea Europe is providing a wide range of services and activities internationally and in Europe for the benefit of the maritime civil and naval industries, including European shipyards and maritime equipment manufacturers.

Tiina Tuurnala – The Finnish Shipowners’ Association

Managing director Tuurnala began her career in the field of hydrography in the early 1990’s. In 2010 Tiina was appointed Development Director of the Finnish Transport Agency and few years later she was appointed Deputy Director General in charge of the traffic and Information Function. Tiina was responsible for national traffic management (road, maritime, rail), icebreaking services, nautical charts and functions related to the development of digitization, automation and intelligent traffic. Since April 2017 she has been Managing director of the Finnish Shipowners Association. Tiina Tuurnala has extensive experience with national and international representation.

The Finnish shipowners are in the forefront of technology and environmental innovations and are strongly part of developing solutions for sustainable shipping.

Alexander Stubb – European Investment Bank

Vice-President of the European Investment Bank since August 2017. His oversights include the Bank’s financing activities in the Nordics, Baltics and a number of Eastern European countries; Funding & Treasury; EU Multiannual Financial Framework; Security & Defence; Corporate Responsibility; Gender Equality and Diversity & Inclusion. Alex Stubb served as Prime Minister, Finance Minister, Foreign Minister, Trade and Europe Minister of Finland. His background is in academia and civil service, with a focus on EU affairs. He was a member of the European Parliament from 2004-2008, a government minister from 2008-16, a member of parliament from 2011-2017 and chairman of the National Coalition Party from 2014-16. He holds a PhD from the London School of Economics, has published 18 books and is a self-professed sports fanatic.

The EIB is the European Union’s bank. It is the only bank owned by and representing the interests of the European Union Member States. EIB works closely with other EU institutions to implement EU policy.

Martin Stopford – Clarksons

Executive director of Clarksons PLC.
Graduate of Oxford University and has a PhD in International Economics from London University. During his 45 years in the Maritime Industry he has held positions as Director of Business Development at British Shipbuilders; Global Shipping Economist with Chase Manhattan Bank N.A.; Chief Executive of Lloyds Maritime Information Services.

Clarksons Research is respected worldwide as the most authoritative provider of intelligence for global shipping.

Margus Schults – Tallink

Managing Director of Tallink Silja. Has worked for AS Tallink Grupp since 2008. First he served as Head of Investor Relations and Organisational Development. From autumn 2009 he was appointed as Managing Director of Tallink Silja Oy. Before starting for AS Tallink Grupp he served in business development, strategy and human resource management positions in SEB in Tallinn, Riga and Stockholm for 14 years.

Tallink is the leading provider of high-quality mini-cruise and passenger transport services in the northern Baltic Sea region, as well as the leading provider of ro-ro cargo services on selected routes.

Isabelle Ryckbost – ESPO

Secretary General of the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) since 1/08/2013. Before taking up this function, Isabelle has been working as Director of the European Federation of Inland Ports (EFIP) and Senior Advisor of ESPO for four years. She studied Law (University of Namur and KULeuven) and European Law (UCL Louvain). Before joining EFIP, she worked in EU Public Affairs for almost 20 years. After a short period at the European Commission (DG Agriculture), she worked in an EU Public Affairs consultancy. In 1994 she started working in the European Parliament, as a political assistant and between 1999 and 2009 she was the political assistant of Dirk Sterckx, where she was mainly active in transport and port-related fields. She is co-author of the handbook “Zo Werkt Europa” (1st edition 2007, 2nd edition 2010).

ESPO represents the common interests and promotes the common views and values of its members to the European institutions and its policy makers.

Patrik Rautaheimo – Elomatic

Chief Executive Officer of Elomatic Oy since January 1, 2016. Mr. Rautaheimo served as Senior Vice President of Marine & Offshore, Consulting & Engineering Resources at Elomatic Oy since December 29, 2015 and served as its Senior Vice President of Business Development.
He chairs also the Board of Finnish Marine Industries.

Elomatic Marine Engineering specializes in wide range of design, engineering and project management task for a comprehensive range of vessel types.

Juha Koskela – ABB

Managing Director of ABB Marine & Ports has joined ABB in 1996 after graduating with a M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Lappeenranta University of Technology. During his first post, Koskela was focusing on developing the service business in Finland and helping establish the new global service organization. In 2003, he moved to Singapore to expand the existing service unit into the systems business unit for drilling rigs. Upon his return to Finland, Koskela worked with Azipod® propulsion business. Koskela was appointed as the Managing Director of ABB Marine & Ports in January 2016.

ABB Marine & Ports provides electric, digital and connected solutions including Azipod® propulsions.

Martin Dorsman – ECSA

Secretary General of the European Community Shipowners’ Associations since the 1st of November 2017. From June 2011 to the date of his appointment as Secretary General he had been the Managing Director of the Royal Association of Netherlands Shipowners (KVNR). From September 2006 to June 2011 he had been the KVNR’s deputy Managing Director. Before joining the KVNR he had been employed by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and as such had been working on macro-economic policy, regional economic policy and R&D-policy. In 1999 he joined the ministry of Transport, where he was responsible for fiscal maritime policy and other maritime policies.

ECSA promotes the interests of European shipping so that the industry can best serve European and international trade in a competitive free business environment to the benefit of shippers and consumers.

Annaleena Mäkilä – Finnish Port Association

Managing Director of Finnish Port Association (FPA) and Vice-chair at European Sea Ports Organization ESPO. Before joining FPA Mrs. Mäkilä worked at Confederation of Finnish Industries (EK) in different positions for almost two decades. Latest she executed as a Member of Board of Directors and was in that role responsible of both the strategy of EK and at the same time working as Head of EK’s regional offices in Finland. Regional transport systems (incl. ports all around Finland) were well on the agenda of regional operations. In the end of 1990’s Mrs. Mäkilä has served as a political adviser for Minister of Justice and Minister of Finance in Finland. Before working in the Prime Minister’s Office she executed advocacy for ten year’s period

FPA is an industry NGO founded in 1923, based in Helsinki. The membership of FPA consists of 31 sea and inland ports. Over 95 percent of the whole Finnish seaborne export and import is transported through FPA’s member ports.

Santiago Garcia-Milà – Port of Barcelona

Deputy General Manager. Prior to his appointment with the Port of Barcelona, he worked for twenty years with different private companies in the area of international marketing. He is currently Deputy General Manager of the Port of Barcelona; President of the International Association of Ports and Harbours, IAPH; Chairman of the Governance Committee and Executive Committee member of the European Sea Ports Organisation, ESPO; President of PortIC, the Barcelona’s Port Community System; Chief Executive Officer of tmZ, Zaragoza Inland Terminal; and associate lecturer in International Marketing at the University of Barcelona.

Port of Barcelona: the main logistics hub in the Mediterranean.

Vesa Marttinen – Wärtsilä

Director, Cruise & Ferry. He has strong track record, from publicly listed global corporations, privately held medium size companies and as entrepreneur. Silja Line (Finland / Sweden), Deltamarin Engineering (US), Aker Yards (Finland / France / US), and MarineCycles (Finland / US / Japan). In spring 2018 Marttinen returned to Wärtsilä to lead Cruise, Ferry and Superyachts segment. Marttinen has also experience from boards of directors at Finnish Marine Industries, SeaEurope, BestServ, SRC Group, Eniram, Gadlab Engineering, EEX Maritime and from several advisory committees.

Mikki Koskinen – ESL Shipping

Managing Director of Ltd, Member of the Aspo Group Executive Committee. He has experience from bulk carrier, dry cargo vessel and special vessel commercial operations in harsh climatic conditions and has participated in development of new service and vessel concepts for both industries and shipping companies, including vessels utilizing state of the art environment-friendly technology.

ESL Shipping is the leading dry bulk sea transport company operating in the Baltic Sea region. ESL Shipping ensures product and raw material transportation for industry and energy production year-round, even in challenging weather conditions. ESL Shipping also offers special services related to loading and unloading large oceangoing vessels at sea. ESL Shipping has recently taken delivery of world’s most eco-friendly LNG-powered ice strengthened bulk carriers. ESL also participates in development of port infrastructure, LNG bunkering facilities and on-shore power supply.

Thomas Kazakos – Cypros Shipping Chamber

Director General of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber. He is also a Member of the Executive Committee of the Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation, as well as the Board of Directors of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Having previously served as a Board Member of the Cyprus Ports Authority, he also acts as the Secretary General / Board Member of the Cyprus Shipowners Employers Association. He represents the Shipping Chamber at the Board of Directors of the International Chamber of Shipping in London and the European Community Shipowners’ Association in Brussels. He serves as a Director of Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency.

The Cyprus Shipping Chamber is the trade association of the Shipping Industry in Cyprus. Today, the Chamber’s Member-companies located in Cyprus and the wider Shipping Sector in Cyprus, collectively employ around 4500 persons ashore and more than 55,000 seafarers of various nationalities onboard their vessels.

Jan Hanses – Viking Line

President and CEO of Viking Line Abp since 2014.
He is the Chairman of the Board: Viking Rederi AB, Viking Line Skandinavien AB and Finlands hamnen Stuveri AB. He is also Member of the Board at Försäkrings Ab Alandia and Finnish Shipowners Association.

Viking Line is a public limited company and a market-leading brand in passenger traffic on the northern Baltic Sea. It’s M/S Viking Grace is the first hybrid vessel that utilises wind for propulsion with a Rotor sail. Together with liquified natural gas (LNG) as fuel, Viking Grace is one of the most environment friendly cruise ferry.

Ville Haapasaari – Port of Helsinki

CEO of since April 2018 Prior to this appointment he has worked at Finavia as the SVP, Helsinki Airport Director 2012-2018. Previously he worked in various responsibilities at Finnlines, main emphasis being on the head of business positions and sales management. His main competences are business management, logistics know-how, managing development projects and working in customer interface both in b-b and b-c business environment.

Cargo traffic at the Port of Helsinki consists primarily of import and export for Finland’s foreign trade. The cargo is shipped in containers, trucks, trailers, and other similar large units. The port of Helsinki is Europe’s busiest passenger port. There are connections to Stockholm, Tallinn, St. Petersburg and Travemünde.

Nicklas Viby Fursund – Rainmaking

Partner & Co-founder. He has International corporate background in business development, operations, strategy, transformation, and leadership of +200 people from 30 nations. Since serial entrepreneur starting tech, innovation and consulting businesses with shipping lines, terminals, logistics and trucking companies, governments and investors.

Antti Peltomäki – DG Enterprise

Deputy Director-General responsible for Directorates dealing with “Sustainable Growth and EU 2020”, “Internal Market for the free movement of goods”, “Service industries” and “Resources Based, Manufacturing and Consumer Goods Industries” – Directorate-General Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SME’s (GROW).

Jaakko Eskola – Wärtsilä

President & CEO since 2015, having worked in Wärtsilä since 1998. His previous positions in Wärtsilä include Senior Executive Vice President and Deputy to the CEO in 2013-2015; President, Marine Solutions, 2006-2015; Vice President, Power Plants Sales & Marketing, 2005-2006; Wärtsilä Development & Financial Services Oy, President, 1998-2005. Eskola is Member of the Board of the Federation of Finnish Technology Industries. In 2008-2011 he held the position of President, European Marine Equipment Council (EMEC).

Wärtsilä is one of the global leaders in smart technologies and complete lifecycle solution for the marine and energy markets.

Ulla Tapaninen – City of Helsinki

Adjunct Professor PhD, has over 20 years’ experience in logistics and maritime transport research and development work. She has worked in shipping companies, universities and in public administration as an environmental manager and professor in maritime logistics. Currently she works as Senior Specialist for City of Helsinki in port and cross-border transport development projects. Dr. Tapaninen has published dozens of academic and professional publications and 2019 a new edition of her book about maritime economics will be released also in English.

Anne H Steffensen – Danish Shipping

Anne H Steffensen – Danish Shipping Director General for Danish Shipping.
Anne’s professional experience includes positions within the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs working, most recently, as Ambassador of Denmark to the United Kingdom and as a State Secretary for Trade and Corporate Affairs within the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Danish Shipping is one of the representatives of the Kingdom of Denmark in the Arctic Economic Council. Danish Shipping is a trade and employer organization with more than 90 members and represent all shipping segments including off-shore.

Karin Orsel – MF Shipping

Founder and CEO of the MF Shipping Group.Chairman of the Royal Association of Netherlands Ship Owners (KVNR), Vice Chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), Council member INTERTANKO, Trustee of the International Seafarers Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN), Supervisory board Groningen Airport Eelde and WISTA International Ambassador (Immediate past president WISTA International).

The MF Shipping Group is a service-led organization that facilitates all maritime-business aspects. MF Shipping Group, based in The Netherlands partly owns and manages a fleet of 55 vessels. Oil product/ chemical tankers, multipurpose vessels and cement carriers. MF Shipping Group employs approximately 1000 seafarers and 50 office staff employees.

Jens Meier – Port of Hamburg

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA). Before his appointment as CEO of the HPA, Mr.Meier served in the Management Board of Software Design & Management AG (Ernst & Young group) and the Board of Directors of Fiege Holding Stiftung & Co. KG
Port of Hamburg to one of the world’s most flexible, high-performance universal ports. 136.5 million tons of cargo crossed the quay walls of Germany’s largest seaport in 2017. Hamburg is accordingly the third largest container port in Europe and in the 18th place on the list of the world’s largest container ports.

Magda Kopczynska – DG Move

Director for Waterborne Transport in Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport within the European Commission. Her Directorate is responsible for the development and follow-up of the implementation of policies in support of logistics, maritime transport, ports, and inland navigation. After joining the European Commission in 2006, to work in the Directorate-General for Internal Market and Services, she was appointed as the Head of Unit for Clean Transport, Urban Transport and Intelligent Transport Systems – between May 2009 and June 2011. In July 2011 she became Head of Unit dealing with Maritime Transport policy and Logistics, until taking up the post of Director for Sustainable and Innovative Mobility in DG MOVE on 1 May 2014.

The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport works in concern with the European Union Member States, European industry, citizens and stakeholders.
